Province - Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son Province.....  is situated in northern and northwestern Thailand and furthest from Bangkok in the north at a distance of approximately 924 km. It boasts an area of approximately 12,681.259 km² or around 7,925,812.5 rai, which is third largest in Northern Thailand and seventh largest in the country. It is approximately 250 km from north to south and approximately 95 km from east to west.

To the north and west it connects to a total of three states in the Union of Burma, namely the southern portion of Shan State; Kayah State and Kawthoolei State via the West Thanon Thongchai Mountains and the rivers Salween and Moei which serve as natural boundaries between the countries. To the south it connects to the district of Tha Song Yang, Tak via the rivers Yuam and Ngao which serve as a provincial boundary. To the east it connects to the districts of Wiang Haeng, Chiang Dao, Mae Taeng, Mae Chaem, Hot and Omkoi in Chieng Mai Province via the Central and East Thanon Thongchai mountain ranges that serve as a boundary line between the two provinces.

Mae Hong Son "Muang Sam Mok" The city of three mists is a mixture of Thai Yai (Shan) and Burmese culture. The remotest province in the north of Thailand about 920 kms.,from Bangkok.

 >> Wat Phrathat

Wat Phrathat Doi Kongmu..... on the top of Doi Kongmu Hill, only 3 km to the west of the provincial town, contains Buddha relics and comprises of two pagodas in the Shan style. The temple is considered the holiest wat in Mae Hong Son. It takes only a few minutes to go by car to the hilltop, from which you have a panoramic view of the town and it's beautiful surroundings.

 >> Thung Buatong
Thung Buatong....... is a place you should never miss. If you travel from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son by Highway 108 in the period from November to December, about one hour after passing Khunyuam county, you will be fascinated to see a sea of golden Mexican sunflowers (Tithonia Diversifolia) blooming along both sides of the road over the rolling hills for miles.
These wild flowers, called Buatong in the northern dialect, look exactly the same as sunflowers but are much smaller. There is a lesser Thung Buatong in Mae Sariang county, also along Highway 108.  Apart from natural attractions, cultural attractions are abundant in Mae Hong Son.
